Who Was the UCC (Uniform Code Council)?

The Uniform Code Council (UCC) was the original organization that developed and managed UPC barcode standards in the United States. The UCC oversaw the creation, licensing, and administration of company prefixes used to generate UPC barcode numbers for retail products.

In the early 2000s, the UCC rebranded and became part of the global organization now known as GS1. Many valid barcode numbers in use today, including those sold by Speedy Barcodes, originate from UCC-issued prefixes created before August 28, 2002.

These pre-2002 prefixes remain legitimate and are widely used for retail product identification without requiring GS1 membership or renewal fees.
